2027: Obi Says Petrol Subsidy Can Return After Corruption Is Tackled

According to a report by Vanguard on September 28, 2026, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to reinstate petroleum subsidy if elected in the 2027 general elections, but said his administration would first tackle corruption.

Obi made the statement on Monday at a town hall meeting organised for the Obi/Kwankwaso presidential ticket in Sokoto, where he identified corruption as one of the major challenges facing the country.

He argued that the subsidy system had been affected by corruption and said addressing the problem would make it possible to reconsider the policy.

“People are talking about subsidy but what is all about it is corruption. By removing the corruption, I assure you that we will bring back subsidy,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor also promised that an NDC administration would tackle corruption across all sectors if elected. He urged Nigerians to support the party’s candidates at all levels during the 2027 elections, describing the task of addressing the country’s challenges as a collective responsibility.
