 40-year-old New York Times staff sh%t d+ad by his 77-yr-old father-in-law and mother-in-law at a parking lot

Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old New York Times engineering director, was sh%t d+ad on Saturday at Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin, California. Police arrested his 77-year-old parents-in-law, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both Dublin residents, in connection with the k+lling.

According to Police, the sho%ting happened around 3:08 p.m. A sergeant spotted McKinsey lying in the parking lot as multiple 911 calls reported g£nshots. Officers found him with multiple g¥nshot wounds, but he was pronounced d+ad at the scene.

Witnesses helped police locate Zhang and Chen nearby. One witness told CBS San Francisco that the masked couple took turns sh%oting McKinsey, while another said he heard five or six g¥nshots before seeing McKinsey bl+eding from his chest.

The couple were detained within minutes and booked into Santa Rita Jail without bail. They face allegations including first-degree m¥rder, conspiracy, negligent firearm discharge and child endangerment. Chen also faces a separate fr@ud-related conspiracy allegation. They are expected in court Wednesday.

McKinsey joined The New York Times in 2023 after working at companies including Splunk, Oracle, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He held computer science degrees from Georgia Tech and UC Berkeley.

Police have not disclosed a motive or said what role each suspect allegedly played. The ki+ling comes amid legal disputes between McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang.

Both sought domestic violence restraining orders in 2025, McKinsey filed for divorce in December, and they continued a child-custody dispute this year. McKinsey also faced child-endangerment-related misdemeanor charges in 2025. Authorities have not linked those disputes to the sh%oting.
