The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has cautioned politicians and public office holders against using stolen public funds to sponsor religious pilgrimages to Mecca and Jerusalem.
The Sultan spoke on Wednesday in Abuja at the opening of a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), themed “Shared Sacred Flourishing in Nigeria.”
He said corrupt funds could not be made acceptable by using them for religious purposes, stressing that religious leaders must take a stronger position against corruption.
“You cannot steal money and send people to Jerusalem or Mecca with corrupt funds and think God will accept your deeds,” the Sultan said.
He also urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to pursue corrupt individuals regardless of their political, religious or social status.
The Sultan further called on religious leaders to avoid inflammatory statements during election periods and promote peace and national unity.
