Buhari Told Me Tinubu Had Asked Him to Choose His VP; I Told Him, ‘Don’t Get Involved’-Lawal

NDC chieftain and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, has recalled a conversation with former President Muhammadu Buhari concerning the selection of a vice-presidential candidate for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

Lawal made the disclosure during an interview with Arise News on Monday, September 28, 2026, while recounting the political consultations and discussions that took place among senior political figures as preparations for the 2023 election gathered momentum.

According to Lawal, Buhari told him that Tinubu had approached him and requested that he provide the vice-presidential candidate for Tinubu’s presidential ticket. Lawal said Buhari believed the request was linked to Tinubu’s earlier involvement in the process that produced a running mate for Buhari during his own presidential campaign.

“Buhari told me Bola had requested that he provide the VP. Since it was Bola who gave him the VP, he should reciprocate. I said, ‘Don’t get involved," Lawal said.
