Rivers 2023 Results: Wike’s Account On Atiku, Obi Sparks Outrage
According to a report by The Vanguard on Saturday, September 26, 2026, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has opened up on how the aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) G5 governors strategically backed Labour Party candidate Peter Obi in parts of the South-South to deny Atiku Abubakar victory in the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout, Wike revealed that the group identified Atiku as their biggest political threat in the region, which was traditionally a PDP stronghold.
“How did he (Obi) win? We, in the G5, had our strategy,” Wike stated. “We said PDP is stronger in the South-South, and our problem would be Atiku. Therefore, instead of Atiku to take it, let it go to the Labour Party.”
While the plan was deployed in states like Edo and Cross River to siphon votes from the PDP candidate, Wike declared that Rivers State was intentionally exempted from the arrangement.
“It was only in Rivers I said, ‘No, Obi would not win here because if he does, it would send a wrong signal somewhere and people would not understand it.’ And we stopped it,” he stated.
Official INEC results eventually declared Bola Tinubu winner of Rivers State with 231,591 votes, while Obi gathered 175,071 and Atiku secured 88,468.
Wike maintained that the move was purely political strategy rather than electoral manipulation. Dismissing rigging accusations as a "baseless narrative," he challenged critics to produce contrary polling unit result
