Sani: The Southern Part Of Nigeria Should Be Allowed To Have Its 8 Years In Office
Senator Shehu Sani has called for the southern region of Nigeria to be allowed to complete an eight-year presidential tenure, arguing that this would help sustain the principle of regional balance in the country’s political leadership.
Sani made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Saturday, September 26, 2026, while discussing political developments and considerations ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The former Kaduna Central senator addressed the longstanding debate over the informal power-sharing arrangement between the northern and southern parts of Nigeria. He argued that the discussion should focus less on the identity of individual politicians and more on ensuring that different regions have an opportunity to occupy the presidency.
According to Sani, the South should be permitted to complete an eight-year presidential period, which he compared with the period between 2015 and 2023 when Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner, served two terms as president.
He said the principle should apply regardless of which southern politician eventually emerges as the presidential candidate.
