Independence at 66: Owo Youth Leader Seeks Full Implementation of S'Court Judgement on LG Autonomy, End To Political Crises in Owo
The President of the Owo Youth General Assembly, the umbrella youth body in Owo Local Government, Comrade Obadaye Temidayo, has called for the full implementation of the Supreme Court judgement on Local Government autonomy and an end to the lingering political crises in Owo Local Government as Nigeria clocks 66.
In his Independence Day message on Wednesday, Comrade Obadaye said Nigeria's 66th anniversary is a time for sober reflection and a renewed commitment to constitutional order and true federalism.
He said grassroots development will remain a mirage if local governments continue to operate under the stranglehold of state governments.
"At 66, true federalism must go beyond rhetoric. The Supreme Court has spoken clearly on Local Government autonomy. What is left is complete implementation. Local governments must be allowed to function as an independent tier of government as enshrined in the Constitution. Any attempt to frustrate the judgement is an assault on our democracy," he said.
The Owo youth leader expressed worry that the prolonged political crises in Owo Local Government have stalled development and deprived the people of democratic dividends.
"As the umbrella body of all youths in Owo Local Government, we have watched with deep concern how these avoidable crises have retarded progress and deepened division. Owo is renowned for peace and leadership, we cannot continue on this path. Our local government must be rescued for effective grassroots progression," he stated.
He therefore appealed to all political gladiators and stakeholders in the ancient kingdom to sheath their swords, embrace dialogue and uphold constitutionalism in the interest of the people.
Comrade Obadaye urged Owo youths to remain peaceful, united and steadfast in their commitment to a better Owo and a greater Nigeria.
