NANS Appeals to Achievers University to Reconsider Expulsion of Students Over Alleged Staff Fraud, Constitutes Intervention Committee
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to the management of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, to reconsider its decision to expel students affected by alleged financial irregularities within the institution.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, 15th October, 2026, and signed by its President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez (BABTEE), the apex students body expressed deep concern over the development, describing it as a matter that requires fairness, due process, and compassion.
According to NANS, available information indicates that the incident occurred a few months ago when a staff member of the university allegedly collected school fees from students under the guise of remitting such payments to the university but failed to account for the funds.
Consequently, some students who reportedly made payments in good faith and believed they had fulfilled their financial obligations are now facing expulsion over circumstances said to be beyond their control.
Comrade Akinteye noted that while the university management has the responsibility to enforce financial regulations and maintain institutional discipline, students who may themselves be victims of alleged financial misconduct should not be made to suffer disproportionately for the actions of others.
He stressed that every affected student deserves a fair hearing and that each case must be examined on its own merits before a decision with such grave academic consequences is upheld.
To address the situation, the NANS President announced the constitution of a special intervention committee to be headed by the National Director of Private Institutions Affairs, Comrade Emmanuel Segun Amos.
The committee is mandated to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, engage the affected students, review available evidence, and interface with the management of Achievers University to seek a fair, peaceful, and lasting resolution.
"I have charged the committee to approach this assignment with diligence, maturity, and a strong sense of responsibility, ensuring that the facts are properly established and that the interests of all parties are given due consideration," the statement read.
NANS further appealed to the management of Achievers University to suspend the implementation of the expulsion decision pending the outcome of the intervention to allow for a thorough and impartial review.
The association urged the university to consider verifiable evidence of payments, including receipts, transfer records, and other relevant documentation in determining the circumstances of each student.
The NANS President clarified that the intervention is not aimed at undermining the university's financial regulations or excusing genuine outstanding obligations, but rather a call for justice, fairness, and the application of due process.
"Where students can demonstrate that they made payments in good faith through channels they reasonably believed to be legitimate, their circumstances deserve careful consideration. Equally, any individual found culpable of financial misconduct should be held accountable in accordance with established procedures," he stated.
Comrade Akinteye reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the welfare, rights, and academic interests of Nigerian students, expressing confidence that through constructive engagement and meaningful dialogue, a resolution can be achieved that protects the future of the affected students without compromising the standards and integrity of the institution.
"I trust that the management of Achievers University will receive this appeal in the spirit in which it is made and work with our committee towards an amicable resolution. The academic future of these students matters, and I believe that justice can be served without compromising the standards and integrity of the institution," he added.
