Atiku Challenges Tinubu to Account for Loans Before New World Bank Funding
According to a report by Vanguard on Monday, September 28, 2026, former Vice President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has challenged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to account for loans already obtained before taking on another $1.5 billion in proposed World Bank financing.
Atiku’s position was contained in a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communications of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, as the Federal Government moves to secure fresh financing from the World Bank.
The proposed facilities include $500 million each for climate resilience, social protection and early childhood development. Atiku acknowledged the importance of the areas targeted by the programmes but questioned whether the government had adequately accounted for previous borrowing.
Nigeria’s public debt stood at ₦166.79 trillion as of June 30, 2026, according to figures from the Debt Management Office. The amount comprises ₦91.59 trillion in domestic debt and ₦75.20 trillion in external debt.
Atiku argued that the rising debt burden required the government to provide clearer information about how borrowed funds had been used and what Nigerians had received from the resulting projects.
