Drug Trafficking: Tinubu Claims Privacy Act Rights But Law Only Applies to US Citizens — Greenspan
Journalist and PlainSite founder Aaron Greenspan has questioned the legal basis for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s defence team invoking the US Privacy Act in an ongoing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit.
According to a report by Channels TV on Sunday, September 27, 2026, Greenspan raised the issue while examining summary judgment briefs filed in the case concerning requests for records connected to Tinubu.
The lawsuit centres on requests made under the US FOIA, which provides a mechanism for seeking access to records held by federal agencies, subject to statutory exemptions. Greenspan said Tinubu’s lawyers had also relied on the Privacy Act of 1974 to oppose the release of certain records.
He questioned whether the Privacy Act could apply to Tinubu, given his understanding of the law’s protections.
“There’s another problem with that same brief, which is that he claims that a separate American law. This whole case is about the Freedom of Information Act, but there’s another law called the Privacy Act. And Mr. Tinubu claims rights under the Privacy Act. The problem is that the Privacy Act only applies to US citizens,” Greenspan said.
