PHYSICAL PLANNING MINISTRY INTENSIFIES CRACK DOWN ON VIOLATORS OF BUILDING AND TOWN PLANNING LAWS
In its determination to ensure compliance to Town Planning laws and the rules and regulations guiding construction of buildings in Ondo State, the state Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban
Development has deployed its task force on monitoring and enforcement to major towns and cities across the state.
The task force visited some Areas in Akure, the state capital, Ondo, Ikare Akoko, Owo and Idanre among others where it was discovered that many buildings and ongoing construction works are without approved layout, building plan, land use clearance while others contravene the approved building plan granted by the Ministry and the extant town planning laws of the state.
Other infractions discovered by the task force includes illegal construction of buildings on government setbacks, encroachment on public lands and distress buildings that poses danger to the lives and properties of the people living in them.
Speaking to Journalists on the activities of task force, the Permanent Secretary of the Building Control Section of the Ministry, Tpl Abimbola Tofowomo said government would no longer tolerate violation of building and town planning laws in any part of the state that could hinder the success of the physical planning and urban renewal agenda of the present administration.
Tofowomo declared that the Commissioner for the Ministry, Hon. Sunday olajide has directed the task force to move round towns and cities in the 18 local government areas of the state with a view to ensuring that construction of building is in line with rules and the approvals granted by the Ministry to achieve modern urban renewal programme of the government as well as avoid incidence of building collapse in any part of the state.
He, therefore called on all builders to approach the Ministry or any of its area offices in the local government areas to obtain necessary approvals before embarking on construction of any structure to avoid demolition of their properties, payment of penalties or prosecution in court for violation of government laws.
Construction sites visited include residential buildings, shopping and hotel complexes, schools, event centers, gas and petrol stations where different contravention notices were served on the property owners while some were outrightly sealed off.
