No Government In The World Has The Capability To Pay 220 Million People Living Wages -Showunmi

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otunba Segun Showunmi, has said Nigerians cannot depend entirely on government employment or public funds to achieve financial stability, arguing that individuals must play a greater role in creating economic value.

Showunmi made the remarks during an appearance on News Central TV, where he discussed Nigeria’s economic structure and the challenges associated with providing adequate wages and opportunities for the country’s large population.

According to the PDP chieftain, no government has the financial capacity to provide a living wage directly to every citizen in a country with a population of more than 200 million people.

He explained that Nigeria operates an economic system that places significant responsibility on the private sector, meaning citizens should seek ways to develop skills, provide services, build businesses and participate productively in the economy.

Showunmi argued that individuals who are able to create value would have a better chance of earning income and improving their standard of living within such an economic framework.

He also questioned the way economic hardship in Nigeria is sometimes assessed through poverty figures and other statistics.
