2027 Election Will Be Decided By Nigerians, Not Billionaires — Makinde
According to a report by Vanguard on September 28, 2026, Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has said Nigerians, rather than wealthy political backers or campaign spending, will determine the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.
Makinde made the remarks on Monday at the APM North-Central Zonal Town Hall Meeting in Lafia, Nasarawa State, as his campaign took its “Reset Nigeria” message to stakeholders in the region.
The governor argued that the election would not be determined by political commentators, pollsters or the financial strength of candidates.
“This election is not going to be determined by the number of billionaires you have in your corner, or how much billion you have to spend. This election will be determined by the people of Nigeria,” Makinde said.
His comments came as the APM continues a series of zonal town hall meetings ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The campaign had scheduled engagements across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, with Lafia designated as the North-Central venue and Enugu scheduled for the South-East meeting on September 30.
Makinde also used the Lafia meeting to criticise the Federal Government’s economic policies. He questioned whether the increased funds available to state governments through the Federation Account had translated into better living conditions for Nigerians.
According to him, Oyo State’s dependence on federal allocation was above 80 per cent when he assumed office in 2019 but fell to about 65 per cent by 2022. He said the figure later climbed back to almost 80 per cent following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
“They claim we have more money, that the states governors, the state government have been collecting more money from the federation account. I’m not arguing with that. Yes, the quantum of the money, yes, we have more money, but has it translated to fighting hunger in our society? The answer is no,” he said.
