Atiku: Now You Are Telling Obi You'll Do 1 Term; The Constitution Says A Pres Serves 2 Term -Ayoade
In a recent interview with Edmund Obilo on Monday, October 5, 2026, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Ibadan, John Ayoade, examined the ongoing debate over the possibility of a presidential candidate committing to serve only one term if elected in the 2027 presidential election.
Ayoade discussed the constitutional provisions governing presidential tenure while commenting on reports that Peter Obi may be willing to serve for only one term as part of broader political negotiations among opposition figures.
According to Ayoade, “Now you are telling Obi you will do one term; the Constitution says a president serves two terms.” He made the remark while questioning the political implications of requiring a presidential candidate to make a one-term commitment in exchange for political support.
The professor noted that the 1999 Constitution provides for a president to serve a maximum of two terms, provided the constitutional requirements for re-election are met. He therefore argued that any political arrangement involving a voluntary one-term commitment should be carefully examined within the context of the constitutional framework
